A loading dock is a classic 4-foot fall hazard hiding in plain sight: an open dock door with a 48-inch drop to grade is an unprotected edge under OSHA §1910.28, and dockboards, mezzanine edges, pits and elevated walkways in the same building stack more exposure on top.

Fall protection is required wherever a walking surface has an unprotected side or edge 4 feet or more above a lower level — a continuous duty with no inspection interval. Docks are high-traffic and high-visibility, which makes them an easy citation if a compliance officer is ever on site.
